Coleman A. Young II, 27, represents the 4th House District in the Michigan House of Representatives. He believes it is his mission to serve the people of Detroit to carry on the legacy of his father, the late Coleman A. Young, who served as mayor of Detroit from 1974 to 1993.
Representative Young attended Wayne State University and worked for the Detroit City Council Research & Analysis Division prior to joining the Michigan House of Representatives in 2007. He has acted in several plays presented at local churches and Wayne State University and is host of The Young Effect, a weekly TV talk show. He also is a member of the congregation at St. Paul Church of God In Christ in Detroit.
Representative Young’s legislative priorities are improving the economy, creating jobs, providing access to basic health care for every Michigan resident, eliminating punitive property taxes, capping interest rates on mortgages, loans and credit cards, as well as stopping the unfair practice of insurance redlining.
Representative Young is Vice Chair of the House Insurance Committee and serves as a member of the Labor Committee, Intergovernmental and Regional Affairs Committee and Transportation Committee.
Working seven days a week on behalf of the Detroit residents, Young's weekly schedule consists of living in a meager Lansing apartment Tuesday through Thursday while the House is in session and traveling back home to Detroit to meet with constituents Friday through Monday. Young says, "I told the citizens of Detroit that they could hold me accountable. I meant that. I always want my constituents to find me on the job working tirelessly for them."
